Seed Phrases Explained: Why Those 12 Words Are Everything
Your seed phrase is the master key to all your crypto. Here is what it is, how to store it safely, and why losing it means losing your funds forever.
A seed phrase (recovery phrase or mnemonic) is a sequence of 12 or 24 random words generated when you create a crypto wallet. It encodes your wallet's master private key in human-readable form. Anyone with access to your seed phrase has complete, unrevokable control of all assets in that wallet.
How Seed Phrases Work
- Generated from a list of 2,048 words (BIP-39 standard)
- 12 words = 128-bit entropy — practically unguessable
- The same seed phrase, on any compatible wallet, always restores the same wallet
- Your wallet app is just an interface — the seed phrase IS the wallet
- Changing devices or apps does not matter — seed phrase migrates your wallet anywhere
How to Store Your Seed Phrase Safely
- Write it on paper in correct order — do NOT store it digitally
- Store in two separate, secure physical locations (home safe + bank deposit box)
- Never type it into any website, app, or chat — it will be stolen immediately
- Never photograph it — cloud backups are not secure
- Consider metal backup plates for fire and flood resistance
What Happens If You Lose It
If you lose your seed phrase and also lose access to your device, your crypto is permanently inaccessible. There is no customer support to call, no password recovery, no government that can help. This is the absolute responsibility that comes with self-custody. Steyble encourages secure backups from the first moment of onboarding.
