Solana became the dominant consumer blockchain in 2025, overtaking Ethereum in daily active users and transaction volume. Its combination of near-zero fees, sub-second finality, and a Coinbase-rivaling UX attracted retail users, meme coin traders, and mobile-first Web3 apps.

Memecoins on Solana
Solana became the memecoin capital of crypto. Pump.fun enabled anyone to launch a token in seconds; thousands of memecoins launch daily. BONK, WIF, POPCAT, and dozens more reached $1B+ market caps. Memecoin trading volume on Solana regularly exceeded all of Ethereum's DEX volume in 2025.
The Firedancer Client
Jump Crypto's Firedancer client — a second independent implementation of the Solana validator — launched in 2025, providing client diversity (previously Solana had only one validator client, a centralization risk). Firedancer targets 1 million TPS, dramatically beyond Solana's current ~65,000 TPS capacity.
How Solana got here: from near-death to default
It is worth remembering how unlikely this position was. The FTX collapse in late 2022 hit Solana harder than any other major chain — FTX and Alameda were among its largest backers and holders, and the network also carried a reputation for outages. The recovery through 2024–2026 came from two things: the outages largely stopped as the client and validator set matured, and the fee structure made a category of applications viable that simply cannot run on Ethereum mainnet. When a transaction costs a fraction of a cent and confirms in under a second, you can build consumer apps that make many small on-chain actions — which is exactly what happened.
Staking SOL: liquid vs native
Solana staking is delegated: you pick a validator and your SOL stays in your wallet rather than being locked in a contract. Native staking pays the base rate with an unbonding period of a few days at epoch boundaries. Liquid staking gives you a token you can keep using in DeFi while it earns.
- Jito — the leading liquid staking option; passes MEV rewards through to stakers, so the effective yield is usually a little above native staking.

- The trade-off is the same as on Ethereum: liquid staking adds a token and a protocol between you and your stake in exchange for keeping the capital productive.
Consumer apps and NFTs
The consumer layer is where Solana differs most from other chains. Tensor became the dominant venue for Solana NFT trading, Dialect built messaging with payments embedded directly in the conversation, and Drip distributed collectibles to subscribers at a scale that only works when minting is effectively free. Solana Mobile's Saga and Seeker phones pushed the same idea into hardware. Whether or not any individual app lasts, the pattern is the point: near-zero fees let developers treat on-chain actions as routine rather than precious.
Honest risks
Two caveats deserve naming. First, network reliability has improved but Solana's history of outages is real, and Firedancer is a mitigation rather than a proof. Second, the memecoin activity that drives much of the volume is a speculative trade, not an investment thesis — most of those tokens go to zero, and the venues that make launching trivial also make rug-pulls trivial. Treat the ecosystem's throughput as the durable feature and the token churn as noise.
Fees and why they change the design space
Solana's fee model is the root of most of its differences. A base fee per signature plus an optional priority fee keeps a normal transaction at a fraction of a cent even under load, and priority fees only spike for contested activity such as a popular token launch. Because cost per action is negligible, developers can put things on-chain that would be absurd on Ethereum mainnet — order-book updates, in-game actions, per-message payments. That is the whole reason the consumer layer developed here rather than elsewhere; it is an economic consequence, not a marketing one.
One distinction worth keeping straight: holding SOL is a bet on the network's token economics, while using the ecosystem is a separate decision. You can transact, swap and stake on Solana without taking a large directional position in SOL beyond the small amount needed for fees.
